Vedic vastu shastra, devalaya or temple vastu has a great importance. As per Vedic vastu shastra, there are three main styles of devalaya or temples -- 1. Nagara (North Indian Style), 2. Dravida (South Indian Style) and 3. Vasera (Indipendent Style). There are also some other styles found in the country.Those are the mainly influenced by regional cuture with combined style of the main three styles and Modern Vastu Architecture.
As per devalaya vastu shastra “the upcomming Rama Mandir of Ayodhya” is of “Nagara Devalaya Style” which is very commonly seen in Northern India.
THE MAIN FEATURE OF NAGARA STYLE TEMPLE
1 Main Temple Spire (Tower) = Sikhara Above Sanctum
2. Mandapa Spire (Tower) = With Spire /Tower
3. Curvature Of The Spire = Curvilinear Centred Over The Sanctum, Also Straight-Edged Pyramidal
4. Sanctum = Single Or Multi-Storey
5. Plan = Mandapa, Sanctum And Tower Plans Are Predominantly Chaturasra (Square); Uncommon: Ashtasra, Vritta, Ayatasra, Ayata Ashtasra, Ayata Vritta, Hasti Prishta, Dwayasra Vrita
6. Gopuram = Not A Prominent Feature
7. Other features = Sacred Pond or Pools, Fewer pillared Mandapas in temple grounds (separate dharmashala), Prakara walls rare (like PURI SHRI JAGANNATHA temple, ODISHA, after 14th century), single or multiple entrances of temple
8. Generally found = northern, western and central of the Indian sub-continent
9. Vahana or Dwaja (Flag) = It was mount or vehicle of the temple’s main deity along with a standard pillar or dhvaj is placed axially before the sanctum.
10. Mithuna (Embracing Couple) = Many Hindu temples, feature “Mithun”(Embracing Couple) sculptures, considered auspicious. Usually, they are placed at the entrance of the temple or on an exterior wall or they may also be placed on the walls between the mandapa and the main shrine.
